Taylor Swift put it perfectly: "You dont know about me, but I bet you want to!"
If you guys don't know Alex Ancira, I can certainly bet you want to.
Here's why.
I met Alex when she stayed with us preseason of her freshman year. My forever roomie Waz and I, sophomores at the time, housed her until her place was ready. Even then, as a newbie trying to fit in to a world full of discombobulated students, you could tell Alex strived for individuality, and she certainly didn't concern herself with the opinions of those who didn't matter. College wasn't going to be a challenge for her. She wasn't going to try and "find herself" by conforming to peer pressure or other peoples social groups. She was going to hone in on the opinions, beliefs, and talents that were already inside her and thrive.
It was definitely admirable.
I had grown a lot in that year of college, but looking back, I'm very thankful to have met Alex that random August day because I've grown so much more having met her. Now I have the pleasure of calling her a great friend. You see, I've learned a great deal from this Austinite, and I'm realizing it now once the distance between us becomes even further.
When I was describing Alex to my family, I told them, "She's the type of person that makes you want to be a better you. She pushes you, and she challenges you, and she certainly teaches you that life throws you random curve balls, but it's how you handle those curve balls that says a lot about you." She focuses on her where other people care too much about what other people think, and although she may think she doesn't have her life together, she's the most put together person I know.
Over the years, I've been lucky enough to see her grow as a person through many difficult obstacles and road blocks. And she's handled it with such grace. If possible, however, I've been even luckier to learn and grow that much more myself because of Alex.
I hope this isn't creepy stalkerish in any way. Simply put, I think everyone deserves to be bragged on a bit for being a pretty kick ass person, and today's her birthday, so why not?? Alex will probably read this and think, "GEEZ SAPPY MUCH? ...and what the hell is with the Taylor Swift quote!" Haha. It's like I said though, Alex is one of a kind. I don't think this will bother her...well the T. Swift reference will!
I am very thankful to have her in my life now, and I hope that, even though Nasty Nac won't bring us together anymore (and even though I'm the annoyingly quirky Mexi), we still keep in touch and remain just a hop, skip or a jump away.
Alex, if I can be an ounce of the inspiration that you are to me, well dang, I'M HAPPY WITH THAT.
Lastly, I'm not sorry about referencing T-Swizzle because it fit perfectly! DEAL WITH IT. Love you my half Mexi/ACL jammin/miles running/Bruno obsessing has-been. Don't ever change.
