We headed on campus to do all the welcoming events with our teammates, and all the while I'm trying to get a feel for Megan, or Waz, which is what she told everyone to call her. The atmosphere was tense that day, and the players were completely on edge with the new coach and how that preseason/season would go (another long hilarious story for different day), so I couldn't exactly deduce anything about anyone. It was the first day, and you could tell everyone was trying to put on their best first impressions.
After our team dinner, Waz and I were truly left alone to "get to know each other." If you don't know me, I can be incredibly awkward and especially spastic if I am nervous or anxious. This just happens to be all of the time. I asked Waz if she wanted to help me decorate my room with those awful looking wall stickers that I thought were the shizz at the time. She obliged, more than likely just to appease me, and as if that wasn't already a nerd enough to thing to do, I hit her with another one of my obsessions.
"Do you like Michael Bublé?" -Me
"Yea! Of course I do." -Waz (LYING THROUGH HER TEETH).
*Cue almost 4 albums of my MB collection*
Together we both stuck hideous stickers up on my wall with Come Fly With Me playing in the background. It's hardly music any player should be listening to before a huge testing day, but Waz certainly allowed me to indulge myself.
That night we didn't even slightly begin to break the ice of what would then turn out to be quite a legendary relationship, and looking back I can't help but laugh. There are entirely too many stories to be told on here about Waz and I (first soccer sunday, first Midtown experience, Umpalumpa's, slap cup, 3x Conference Champs, Wednesday's S&C sessions etc), all of which make me sad to think we can't relive our epic college days, especially now that she too is leaving Nacogdoches for good.
Waz came home with me almost every holiday during the four years we played together. She became an honorary Salazar so much so that I think my grandpa wanted to know more about Waz then myself whenever she happened to be absent from Easter. Not only that, but my mom now only really concerns herself with making her famous chocolate cake for the sole purpose of feeding the entire double decker to Wazzy. That's how much she is loved.
Any one of our teammates or coaches could tell you Waz is feisty, extremely independent, and often times blunt. So during our countless hours of road trips over the years, when she would allow me to play the only 5 Michael Bublé songs she had on her iPod (always with some moderate complaints on her part), I knew. I knew Waz would do just about anything for me including listening to Michael Buble in our new dorm on our very first night as roomies ready to tackle college and all that it encompassed.
Waz.
What can I say?
I'm so proud of you roomie. Although you'll take it with you to the grave that I never wanted to be roomies, God really knew what he was doing when he paired us up together 6 long years ago. To say Tony's little switch-a-rue worked out for the best is an understatement.
Also, sorry for the long, sappy novel. Actually, I'm really not. You are loved my friend.
Congrats on that Masters Rooms!
